PMMDA Present 2005 Student Achievement Award

The 2005 Student Achievement Award from the PMMDA (Polymer Machinery Manufacturers & Distributors Association) has been awarded to Loughborough University student Rachel Illsley who has been studying the MSc Programme in Polymer Technology since October 2001 on a part-time basis.

Rachel was nominated for the award by Course Director Prof. Marianne Gilbert, who commented that Rachel’s performance had been excellent – having obtained ‘Distinction’ in all modules.

More remarkable is the fact that Rachel achieved this whilst having a young family and in fact was on maternity leave during the course, as well as holding down a job BPB Plc. in the Analytical section of the Group Technical department.

Considered by all as an outstanding student, Rachel will qualify for her MSc with distinction when the Exam Board sits later this summer.

As well as receiving a Certificate of Achievement from the PMMDA, Rachel also received a cheque for £500.

The PMMDA offer Student Achievement Awards through tutor recommendations.

Further information available from PMMDA office.

2004 Winner

Zahid Sarwar, studying BEng Hons in Polymer Engineering entered the course as a direct entrant at Level 2, having decided that his initial choice to study as a Pharmacy Technician was not for him.    His science background offered a good foundation for the course but he was deficient in areas such as engineering applications and computer aided design.   Through determination and hard work, Zahid has achieved merit passes in 4 of the modules at level 2 and all level 3 (degree year) modules taken so far.

First time winner Zahid Sarwar has achieved a BEng (Hons) Polymer Engineering 2.1.

Zahid also won the Polymer Engineering Course Medal this year, which is awarded to the top student of the year.  He is planning to carry on with further study at Napier University in September  on the Msc in Engineering – Polymers course.

Napier University, Edinburgh offer polymer related courses through their engineering faculty.

POLYMER STUDY TOURS

The PST's were initiated by the Worshipful Company of Horners in 1987. Since September 2000, the Horners, Polymer NTO, BPF, CIEC-York University and the Institute of Materials now make up the Steering Committee.

The study tours consist of a number of Tour Centre Universities, namely Trowbridge, Manchester Metropolitan, Napier running a 3 1/2 day Workshop for Secondary School Teachers. The course operates in line with A and AS curriculum. Industry based case studies are introduced with emphasis on what the teacher can take back to the classroom in order to promote the Polymer Industry to students.

The DTI think so much of the concept and delivery of the PST's that they ahve awarded matched financing for the development of the Tours i.e. the will support the development of course material and the search for new centres.

The first objective of the PST is "To promote knowledge of polymers and their importance to the quality of everyday life" and other objectives are concerned with the education of teachers, the promotion of high quality recruits and the enhancement of polymer teaching. The PST's offer a unique opportunity to access and influential sector of the population, and often to reverse negative impression and in their place, created a positive image. They create a 'window' into the classroom and through it direct contact with student who are the customers of tomorrow!

Thus the PST's are an effective education initiative, operating in the name of the Plastics Industry! they have relied on the support of the Industry, and it is believed that the support has been rewarded.

2006  dates are London Metropolitan  June 18th to 21st,
Bradford University  June 21st to 24th
Napier, Edinburgh  June 25th to 28th
